Limewire Shuts Down

0

After four years in and out of the courtroom battling the RIAA over copyright infringement accusations, peer to peer file sharing service Limewire has finally been shut down.

“Naturally, we’re disappointed with this turn of events,” Limewire CEO George Searle said today. “We are extremely proud of our pioneering history and have, for years, worked hard to bridge the gap between technology and content rights holders. However, at this time, we have no option but to cease further distribution and support of our software.”

This would have been huge news if this was 2001. However, in a day and age where you can purchase almost any song you want for under $1.30, is this really such a loss? Sure, services like Limeware, Bearshare, Napster, and AudioGalaxy provided a great way to get bootlegs and live tracks, but at what cost? Since the RIAA started its blitzing campaign against file sharers, is the new Linkin Park single really worth going to court over?

These services had a place and a time. But in today’s world, it’s just not worth the risk.
